Awake Deep Plane Facelift Under Local Anesthesia in Istanbul
Updated: 30 minutes ago
Prof. Dr. Suleyman Tas performs the deep plane face and neck lift with the patient awake, under local anesthesia. There is no general anesthesia. You are awake, comfortable and pain-free throughout, and you walk out the same day to your hotel with your private nurse.
What is an awake facelift?
An awake facelift is a facelift performed while the patient is conscious. Instead of being put to sleep, your face and neck are numbed with local anesthesia. The experience is much like a long dental or hair-transplant session.
The term "awake facelift" is sometimes used for small, skin-only lifts. At Prof. Dr. Suleyman Tas Clinic it means a full deep plane face and neck lift, in which the deeper layer of the face (the SMAS, or superficial musculoaponeurotic system) is released and repositioned together with the skin, combined if needed with a temporal lift, forehead lift, eyelid surgery, fat transfer or lip lift in the same session.
Why Prof. Dr. Tas operates under local anesthesia
These are long operations, usually six to eight hours. After more than ten thousand patients, Prof. Dr. Tas performs them under local anesthesia because waking up from general anesthesia after a long facial operation raises blood pressure, and that increases the risk of bleeding and nausea. Under local anesthesia you stay awake and comfortable, and you walk out the same day.
One patient at a time
Prof. Dr. Tas operates on only one patient per day, and he performs no surgery on the day before yours. That day belongs to you: he meets you face to face, goes through every detail with you, and prepares himself physically and mentally for your operation. On the day of surgery he is one hundred percent concentrated on you and nothing else.
Who is a good candidate?
There is no age limit; men and patients who have had a previous facelift are welcome. To be accepted you must:
not smoke for at least six months before surgery, and never after;
have a normal BMI (body mass index);
not be pregnant or breastfeeding;
have any chronic condition, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, under control with medication and followed by your doctor. Untreated high blood pressure is a bleeding risk and is not accepted;
not use blood thinners, even if you could stop them, because stopping blood thinners for surgery raises the risk of clots; and
be able to talk with Prof. Dr. Tas directly in English or Turkish, without an interpreter.
Prof. Dr. Tas decides in the consultation whether to accept you. He only operates when he believes the result will meet your expectations.

Risks
Every facelift carries risks, whether it is done under local or general anesthesia. These include bleeding and hematoma, infection, visible scarring, temporary or, rarely, permanent nerve weakness, skin problems, asymmetry and the need for further surgery. Local anesthetic itself has side effects and dose limits. Prof. Dr. Tas discusses your individual risk level with you in the consultation.
