How to Choose the Right Breast Reduction Surgeon

One of the most common breast aesthetic procedures is breast reduction surgery. Some women are unhappy with breasts that feel too small, while others feel theirs are larger than they'd like. Breast size is mostly determined by genetics, though significant weight gain and changes after breastfeeding can also play a role. In this week's blog post, we'll walk through the breast reduction surgery process and give you a general overview.

When Is Breast Reduction Surgery Necessary?

In the introduction, we touched on the main reasons behind breast aesthetic concerns. In this section, we'll look at when breast reduction surgery should be considered.

  • It's worth remembering that beauty standards are partly subjective. Two women with breasts of the same size may see them differently — one may feel hers are too large, while the other doesn't. So if your breasts look too large to you in the mirror and it bothers you, breast reduction surgery may be worth considering. This reason is purely about how your breasts look to you.

  • On the other hand, breast size can affect you physically as well as aesthetically. Examples include lower back and upper back pain caused by breast weight, excessive sweating and rashes under the breasts, and increasing sagging over time due to breast volume.

  • Another reason is having to deal with unwanted comments from those around you because of your breast size, which can inevitably affect your self-esteem and confidence.

Let's say you've decided to reduce your breast size for one of the reasons above, or a similar one. The next step is finding the right breast reduction surgeon.

What to Look for in a Breast Reduction Surgeon

Once you've decided to move forward with breast surgery, choosing your surgeon becomes the key decision. Here are the main points to keep in mind at this stage:

  • Put together a shortlist of plastic surgeons to consider. Try not to make this list too long.

  • Research the surgeons on your list in more detail and compare them with one another.

  • The surgeon you choose should be someone you feel you can trust.

  • After comparing your options, contact the office of the surgeon you feel most confident will give you the results you want, and ask what can be done for your case. At your first appointment, share your expectations with your surgeon.

Before Breast Reduction Surgery

After you describe your concerns and expectations to your surgeon, they will examine you. Based on that exam, several factors will be discussed with you — including your breast size, skin quality, age and whether you have children — along with further details about breast aesthetic surgery.

Depending on your current health conditions, you may also be asked to have tests such as an ultrasound or mammogram. This is essential for the breast surgery process to move forward correctly. In addition, markings and planning are done right before surgery, based on what you've discussed together. In short, once your health conditions, body structure and expectations have been assessed, the breast reduction surgery process begins.

Breast Reduction Surgery and Recovery

Once the planning is complete, you'll go into breast reduction surgery. Afterward, you'll be asked to stay in hospital for one night as a precaution. Most women recover within about a week and are able to pick their daily routine back up. You'll also be given a special support bra after surgery, which your surgeon will typically ask you to wear for about 2–3 weeks.

You shouldn't experience significant pain after surgery. That said, since this is still a surgical procedure, some numbness and bruising in the breast area during the first month is normal and shouldn't worry you — these are expected, temporary effects. You'll also be asked to avoid work for the first week and avoid strenuous exercise for the first month after surgery.
