Severe Facial Dermatitis Following Rhinoplasty due to an Unusual Etiopathogenesis: Rosacea

Methods and Clinical Approach

A 27-year-old woman developed marked itching, burning, erythema and bullous lesions five days after endonasal rhinoplasty. Symptoms worsened despite topical steroid treatment. A history of episodic facial flushing prompted reconsideration of the diagnosis.

Results

The patient responded rapidly after retinoic-acid treatment began on postoperative day 22. Lesions resolved by the second month, with no recurrence at six months and a satisfactory rhinoplasty result.

Clinical Significance

Persistent or worsening dermatitis after rhinoplasty should prompt a careful history for rosacea and multidisciplinary reassessment, because rosacea and contact dermatitis may require different treatment.
