Nasal Massage and Aftercare After Rhinoplasty Surgery
Updated: Oct 3
As Dr. Suleyman Tas Clinic, in this week's blog post we address the topic of massage after rhinoplasty surgery. Nasal massage, one of the aftercare recommendations for people who have had rhinoplasty, is of great importance. Once the splint on the nose and the packing inside the nose have been removed, massage should be performed as advised by your doctor.
How Is Massage Performed After Rhinoplasty Surgery?
The skin of the nose can be gently cleansed with a mild soap or petroleum-jelly-based skin care lotions. Great care should be taken during this cleansing. Massage should be performed on the nose regularly and effectively for 20 minutes a day for 2 months. The purpose of the massage is to stimulate circulation and the facial lymphatics. This speeds up lymphatic flow in the nose and minimizes the swelling and edema that form on the nose. Minimizing this swelling and edema has a positive effect on the healing process. However, patients should not apply any massage technique they have seen online on themselves. Since the procedure performed on each patient is different, the massage can also be specific to the individual. It should always be done on your doctor's advice, and your doctor's recommendations should be taken into account.
Besides the massage that should be done after rhinoplasty surgery, there are many other aftercare recommendations. We can list these care recommendations item by item as follows:
Aftercare After Rhinoplasty Surgery: Recommendations
After being discharged, patients who have had rhinoplasty surgery should sleep with their head elevated at home for 1 week, as this reduces surgery-related swelling.
Sleeping on your side or on your stomach is forbidden.
Blowing your nose, straining, coughing, bending over and standing up, and lifting or carrying heavy loads should be avoided, as they increase the risk of bleeding.
Foods that require vigorous or prolonged chewing should be avoided.
Salt intake should be restricted, as this shortens the process of the swelling resolving from the body.
A protein-rich diet should be followed.
You should rest more than usual and avoid strenuous activities such as sexual intercourse for 2 weeks.
Excessive or prolonged talking and exaggerated facial movements such as laughing should be avoided for 2 weeks.
For 2 weeks, clothing that buttons at the front or back should be worn. Tight T-shirts and high-collared clothing that must be pulled over the head should be avoided.
Sports such as yoga, pilates and fitness should be avoided for 8 to 10 weeks.
Wearing prescription glasses or sunglasses that rest on the nose is forbidden for at least 8 weeks.
Contact lenses can be used 2 to 3 days after the surgery.
Makeup can be applied once the splint and packing have been removed.
