What Are the Health Benefits of Rhinoplasty?

One common assumption about rhinoplasty is that it is performed only for physical, aesthetic reasons. In fact, rhinoplasty isn't done purely for cosmetic concerns — in some cases it is also performed for health reasons. In this week's blog post, we'll discuss the health benefits of rhinoplasty and the health problems it can resolve.

Health Benefits of Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty offers solutions to several nose-related health problems. We can list the health benefits rhinoplasty provides as follows:

Easier Breathing: Rhinoplasty corrects the shape of the nose, and if there is any deviation, straightening it allows the person to breathe more comfortably. A deviation can develop from birth or from later trauma to the nose. In these cases, the septum — the wall separating the two nostrils — is crooked, which narrows one of the nasal passages. During the operation, correcting this deviation both creates an improved appearance and resolves the breathing difficulty. For more details on breathing problems, you can read our article, Nasal Valve Stenosis Symptoms and Surgery.

Improved Sense of Smell: As you know, the nose is our organ of smell. In an unhealthy nasal structure, the nasal wall and mucosa can prevent scents from being detected fully, which also affects taste — when the nose can't smell properly, it becomes harder to enjoy the taste of food. The adjustments made during rhinoplasty help resolve this problem: correcting the nasal wall and mucosa improves the sense of smell.

Improved Voice: When nasal congestion occurs, whether from birth or later in life, it can cause a nasal-sounding voice, known as rhinolalia. Rhinoplasty opens the nasal passages and clears the congestion, so if the voice change is linked to this issue, the nasal speech problem is resolved.

Reduced Snoring: Problems in the nose can also lead to snoring. When these nasal problems are corrected, snoring caused by them will be resolved as well.

Better Sleep: Sleep is one of our most important needs, resting us both mentally and physically. If nasal problems are causing difficulty breathing comfortably, a person may wake up frequently at night and struggle to reach deep sleep. Rhinoplasty resolves this issue, clearing up the sleep problems caused by nasal congestion.

Relief From Sinusitis: The nose also contains the sinuses, the complex structures that warm and humidify the air we breathe in. When the sinuses become inflamed, this is what's known as sinusitis, usually caused by infections or other problems inside the nose. When the sinus openings become blocked, fluid builds up inside them, allowing bacteria to grow and infection to develop. During rhinoplasty, the soft tissue and nasal bones are corrected, which relieves pressure in the nostril: the sinus openings widen, the trapped fluid can drain, and the infection clears.

Lower Risk of Upper Respiratory Infections: When we breathe through the nose, the air is warmed, filtered, and humidified. When the nose is blocked, it can no longer perform this task, so breathing shifts to the mouth. Breathing through the mouth makes conditions like tonsillitis, pharyngitis, upper respiratory infections, and laryngitis more frequent. During rhinoplasty, septum deviation correction and turbinate reduction are performed, allowing the person to breathe comfortably through the nose again.

Performing rhinoplasty to correct these health problems is also referred to as septoplasty. Learning more about septoplasty will give you a clearer picture of how rhinoplasty relates to these health issues.
