Rhinoplasty is not a method used solely for aesthetic concerns. Health problems are also extremely important situations that may require rhinoplasty. Nasal septal perforation is also a significant health problem. In this week's blog post, we want to cover the details of nasal septal perforation repair, which causes various complaints.

What Is Nasal Septal Perforation?

NSP, or nasal septal perforation, is the name given to a complete through-and-through hole in the nasal septum, the partition that separates the two nostrils.

What Are the Causes of Nasal Septal Perforation?

Nasal septal perforation can occur due to various causes. We can list the conditions that cause nasal septal perforation as follows;

  • It can occur as a complication seen after nose surgeries.

  • Nose picking, piercing, foreign objects, and treatments arising from similar causes can be responsible.

  • Long-term use of nasal spray can cause it.

  • Cocaine use can cause nasal septal perforation.

  • It can occur as a result of infections.

  • It can occur due to developing tumors.

What Are the Symptoms of Nasal Septal Perforation?

Nasal septal perforation can be extremely bothersome for some patients, while showing no symptoms at all in others. Symptoms can vary from person to person depending on the location, causes, and size of the perforation. As the size of the perforation increases, the airflow inside the nose becomes disrupted. We can list the complaints caused by nasal septal perforation as follows;

  • Crusting in the nose.

  • Nosebleeds.

  • A whistling-like sound when breathing.

  • Nasal congestion.

  • Pain.

  • Nasal discharge.

  • Postnasal drip.

  • Cartilage inflammation.

  • A large perforation located anteriorly can cause the loss of the nasal dorsum's support, leading to a collapse of the nose.

How Is Nasal Septal Perforation Diagnosed?

There are two ways to diagnose nasal septal perforation. These are;

  • The nostrils are gently spread apart with an instrument to perform an internal nasal examination. A perforation located anteriorly can be easily detected this way.

  • An endoscopic examination should be performed to detect a perforation located posteriorly.

Both methods are painless and are performed quickly.

How Is Nasal Septal Perforation Treated?

If nasal septal perforation does not cause any complaints, treatments such as nasal irrigation, moisturizing ointments, and septal buttons can be applied. In cases with intense symptoms, the ideal solution is surgical intervention. The lining tissue called the mucosa inside the nose is lifted and advanced up to the perforation. It is then sutured and the perforation is closed. The success of the operation depends on the characteristics of the perforation and the skill of the surgeon.
