Can Choosing the Right Surgeon Prevent Smell Loss After Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty comes in many different forms, and there are many topics people wonder about when it comes to nose surgery. People who are considering having a rhinoplasty in the near future often have several questions in mind. One of these questions is: ‘Does loss of smell occur after rhinoplasty?’ As Dr. Suleyman Tas Clinic, we decided to base this week’s blog post on that very question. We hope it will be a useful and informative read, and hope you enjoy it.

Let’s begin by answering the question at the heart of this post. Yes, loss of smell can occur after rhinoplasty. However, this is something you would typically only experience in the short term. During rhinoplasty, silicone packing is placed inside the nose. This packing is hollow in the middle, so you can still continue to breathe after the surgery. However, the openings in this packing can become blocked by fluids that build up inside the nose, and a loss of smell can begin. This is a temporary condition. Once the packing is removed, your sense of smell returns. Although very rare, loss of smell can occasionally be permanent. In that case, your choice of surgeon is extremely important — choosing the right surgeon can help prevent smell loss after rhinoplasty.

Who Should Perform Your Rhinoplasty to Help Prevent Smell Loss?

As mentioned in the previous paragraph, if you make the right choice of rhinoplasty surgeon, the risk of your sense of smell weakening after rhinoplasty is eliminated. So what should you look for in a surgeon you can trust and describe as the right rhinoplasty surgeon in Turkey?

  • Has a proven track record in the field,

  • Takes into account not only the appearance of the nose but also its functions during rhinoplasty,

  • Uses technologies during the procedure that do not affect the nose’s sense of smell,

  • Achieves the desired appearance with the changes made inside the nose, while avoiding complications that would require revision surgery or negatively affect the sense of smell,

  • Follows up on the process properly and adequately after the rhinoplasty is performed.

In Some Patients, Smell Loss Can Occur Even Before Rhinoplasty

Reduced sense of smell, or not being able to smell adequately, can occur independently of rhinoplasty, even before the surgery. In fact, many people suffer from this without realizing it. Following the examinations we carry out on patients who come to Dr. Suleyman Tas Clinic for aesthetic concerns, we sometimes find that they could have a nose that breathes and smells better. Depending on the patient’s wishes, we optimize not only the aesthetic appearance of the nose but also its breathing and smell potential. If you sleep with your mouth open at night, feel a dry throat, catch colds more often than usual, or wake up feeling that you haven’t rested enough, you may have problems with your nose’s sense of smell that you haven’t noticed.
