Return to Social Life After Rhinoplasty
Updated: Oct 3
Rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly requested aesthetic procedures. People considering rhinoplasty often feel anxious about what comes after surgery. Among patients' main concerns are how the healing process unfolds and when they can return to social life after the operation. That's why we've put together this blog post on when you can expect to return to social life after rhinoplasty.
Returning to Social Life After Rhinoplasty
If there are no complications after rhinoplasty, the patient is usually discharged the same day or the following day. The healing process after rhinoplasty is divided into three stages: early, middle, and late. The first week after surgery is referred to as the early stage. Swelling and edema in the nose are common side effects during this stage. This swelling and edema typically resolve within the 7 days covered by the early stage, though if you have thicker nasal skin, it may take longer to subside. For this reason, frequent doctor check-ups are recommended during the early stage. To help shorten this period, with your doctor's guidance, you can apply ice around the nose and eyes every other day. The middle stage covers the period from day 7 to the end of the second month, while the late stage spans from the second month up to one year. Most of the healing is completed from the second month onward. Recovery can vary from person to person.
Frequently Asked Questions About Returning to Social Life After Rhinoplasty
When Can I Return to Work After Rhinoplasty?
How soon you return to work after rhinoplasty depends on the type of job you have. If you work at a desk job, you can typically return to work around 7 days after surgery, while patients with physically demanding jobs generally need 3 to 4 weeks before returning to work.
When Can I Return to School After Rhinoplasty?
After surgery, the patient can get up and move around within 2 days. Patients can usually return to school after 1 week.
When Can I Start Exercising After Rhinoplasty?
You should avoid exercising for about 6 weeks after rhinoplasty. After 6 weeks, light activities such as walking can be resumed. Contact sports or physically demanding activities where you risk taking a blow to the nose should only be resumed once you have fully healed. Avoiding physical activity for 6 weeks helps prevent risks such as nosebleeds or swelling. You can find more detailed information in our blog post on when to start exercising after rhinoplasty.
When Can I Have Sexual Intercourse After Rhinoplasty?
Healing after rhinoplasty takes a certain amount of time. The swelling and edema in the nose typically subside within 3 weeks. During this period, the nose must not be struck and you should be very careful. For this reason, sexual intercourse is not recommended during the first 3 weeks. After the 4th week, intercourse can resume as long as no impact occurs to the nose. You can find more detailed information in our blog post on sexual intercourse after rhinoplasty.
What Happens if I Hit My Nose After Rhinoplasty?
Hitting the nose can affect both the healing process and the outcome of the rhinoplasty. That's why protecting the nose from impact after surgery is very important. You can find more detailed information in our blog post on hitting your nose after rhinoplasty.
When Can I Wear Makeup After Rhinoplasty?
You can wear makeup once the splint and packing have been removed after rhinoplasty, which usually falls around the end of the first week. You can wear makeup as long as it is not overly heavy.
When Can I Get Skin Care Treatments After Rhinoplasty?
For skin care treatments after rhinoplasty, the post-surgical effects need to subside first, which typically takes about 1 month. Once your post-operative check-ups are complete, you can have skin care treatments under your doctor's supervision.
Can I Wear Glasses After Rhinoplasty?
Wearing glasses is not recommended during the first month after rhinoplasty. Glasses put weight on the nose, which can affect its shape. After the first month, you can resume wearing glasses with your doctor's approval.
When Can I Shower After Rhinoplasty?
Two days after surgery, you can shower by tilting your head back. From day 7 after rhinoplasty onward, you can shower comfortably.
Can I Perform Ablution After Rhinoplasty?
After rhinoplasty, drawing water into the nose during either full ablution (ghusl) or regular ablution (wudu) can be risky. For this reason, at least 14 days should pass after surgery before performing ablution.
