What Happens in the Rhinoplasty Operating Room?
In this week's article, we want to walk you through what actually happens in the rhinoplasty operating room, for anyone considering a nose job but feeling nervous about the process. We'll answer one of the questions patients ask most often: ‘What happens in the rhinoplasty operating room, and should I be afraid of it?’
Before rhinoplasty, patients go through a detailed examination and planning process. In the first stage, an endoscopic device is used to check the nasal airway so any health issues can be identified. In the second stage, the doctor performs a physical examination and visually assesses any deformities. The patient's aesthetic expectations are discussed in detail. If the patient is medically suitable for rhinoplasty, the process moves to the next stage. Not every patient is a suitable candidate — a person must also be physically and psychologically ready. Photographs taken in a dedicated photo studio allow for detailed, precise calculations. Once the doctor completes the personalized planning and facial-proportion calculations, the necessary notes are recorded and the planning process is finalized. Before the operation, blood tests are carried out to complete the final pre-surgical checks. There are many detailed, systematic control mechanisms in place specifically to ease any fear surrounding rhinoplasty.
Is There Anything to Fear in the Rhinoplasty Operating Room?
Since fear of rhinoplasty can also occur in the operating room itself, we want to go into detail about this stage as well. Contrary to what many people assume, the low temperature in the operating room isn't arbitrary — it exists to create a more sterile environment with minimal infection risk for the patient. To prevent the patient from being affected by the cool temperature, the room is kept warm under sterile conditions. Before rhinoplasty begins, the operating room nurses prepare everything needed for the procedure and set up the required sterile environment. When necessary, low-dose sedatives may also be used to help keep the patient's anxiety about rhinoplasty under control. Just before rhinoplasty starts, the patient's surgical site is cleaned with an antiseptic solution. Since nose surgery is performed under general anesthesia, every anesthesia-related risk is tested and ruled out beforehand through pre-operative examinations. Throughout the procedure, an anesthesiologist and an anesthesia technician accompany the surgeon at the patient's side, continuously monitoring vital signs.
The Closed Technique used in rhinoplasty is designed to make the necessary interventions without creating trauma in the tissue. Since the tissue and ligament functions at the tip of the nose are preserved, the flexibility and function of the nasal tip remain intact. Operating time depends on the specific intervention required, but the rhinoplasty procedure takes an average of 2 hours and ends once the patient is woken up by the doctor and anesthesia team.
Thanks to general anesthesia, which simply keeps you asleep during the operation, you won't feel any pain or discomfort throughout rhinoplasty. The anesthesia dose you receive during the procedure is determined based on factors such as your height, weight, and any medications you use. At this point, every focus — down to the millimeter — is on fully meeting the patient's expectations and needs. In short, every fine detail throughout the process is considered so the patient goes through the surgery as comfortably as possible. Patients are also given detailed guidance on what to do and what to avoid afterward. So there is truly no need to fear rhinoplasty in any way. One other source of fear around rhinoplasty is the fear of nasal packing after rhinoplasty.
