Case Study 15: Closed Septorhinoplasty for a Crooked Nose with a Dorsal Hump
Updated: Oct 3
Case summary
Patient: 21-year-old woman from the USA
Procedure: closed septorhinoplasty
Surgeon: Prof. Dr. Suleyman Tas, Prof. Dr. Suleyman Tas Clinic, Istanbul
Goal: a straight nose without a hump, natural in harmony with her face, and better breathing

The patient's concerns
This young patient travelled from the United States because her nose was crooked and carried a visible dorsal hump. A crooked nose is almost always accompanied by a deviation of the septum inside, so her plan had to address breathing as well as appearance.
What is septorhinoplasty?
Septorhinoplasty combines two operations: septoplasty, which straightens the internal septum to improve airflow, and rhinoplasty, which reshapes the external nose. It is the standard solution for crooked noses, because the external bend cannot be corrected permanently while the septum underneath remains deviated.
Septorhinoplasty can address:
A deviated septum, which can cause blocked breathing, snoring and poor sleep
Other functional problems, such as a collapsed nasal valve or a narrow nasal passage
Cosmetic problems, such as a hump, a crooked nose or a large or droopy nose
What was done
Prof. Dr. Tas performed a closed septorhinoplasty, with all incisions inside the nostrils so that no scar is visible. The deviated septum was straightened and repositioned in the midline, the dorsal hump was removed and the nasal bones were realigned using precise techniques, bringing the whole nose into a straight line. The shape was designed to remain natural and to suit her facial proportions, not to follow a template. Learn more on the rhinoplasty page.
Result
The patient achieved a straight, balanced nose with a smooth profile and improved nasal breathing, without any visible scar. More results are in the female rhinoplasty before and after gallery.
Travelling to Istanbul for rhinoplasty
International patients typically stay seven days: consultation and tests on arrival, surgery the next day, and splint removal before flying home. Follow-up continues online with photographs at set intervals.
Frequently asked questions
Can a crooked nose be fully straightened?
Most can be greatly improved; the septum, bones and cartilage must all be corrected together.
Is closed rhinoplasty suitable for crooked noses?
Yes, in experienced hands. It avoids an external scar and preserves tissue.
When can I fly after rhinoplasty?
Usually after splint removal at around seven days.

How soon can I go back to work after nose surgery?
Most patients return to desk work once the cast is removed at about a week, when the swelling and bruising around the eyes have largely faded.
Will my result look like this one?
Every nose starts from different anatomy — skin thickness, cartilage strength and any previous surgery change what is achievable. A case shows what was possible for that patient, not a promise for every nose.
When can I exercise after nose surgery?
Light walking in the first week, gentle cardio after three to four weeks, and contact sports or anything that risks a blow to the nose only after about three months.
Does the result change over the years?
The nose ages with the face: skin thins and the tip settles slightly over decades. A nose whose support has been preserved or rebuilt keeps both its shape and its airway.
