The authors identify frontal-view consistency, lighting, patient positioning and the potential for image-editing bias as limitations of conventional static photography.


Objective


The main goal was to present a standardized video-recording process that could provide reproducible, high-quality documentation of rhinoplasty patients. The authors sought to add dynamic evaluation to conventional photographic views while keeping the patient position, camera and lighting features controlled.


Rotational Platform and Studio Setup


The system uses a rotational platform-based chair positioned in the center of a photography studio in front of a black background. The platform described in the publication supports up to 80 kg. A camera using 35-mm photography and a 50-mm lens is positioned approximately one meter from the patient, with two para-flashes arranged at approximately 45 degrees.


The patient is photographed without makeup or jewelry and with a relaxed facial expression. The Frankfurt horizontal line is used for positioning and is kept parallel to the ground, while the camera records at the patient’s eye level.


Dynamic Recording Protocol


The platform rotates clockwise at a constant speed of approximately 1.33 rpm. The paper describes a recording sequence of roughly 24 seconds, incorporating a stable frontal view, rotation from frontal to profile, a stable profile view and a dynamic smile component. This produces a continuous representation rather than a small number of isolated still images.


Results and Advantages


The authors report that image quality from the rotational video process was comparable to standardized photographs. The dynamic format offers an additional advantage: it reduces the reliance on Photoshop corrections that could introduce bias or create uncertainty in scientific presentations.


The method is presented as useful for preoperative planning, postoperative assessment, consultation, education and scientific meetings. Dynamic documentation can allow colleagues to observe facial movement and transitions between views that are not captured by static photography alone.


Photographic Standardization Principles


The discussion emphasizes consistent patient preparation and positioning, controlled background, equal-intensity lighting, appropriate focal length and a camera axis perpendicular to the region being photographed. The authors prefer a black background to minimize shadows and reflections and describe a quarter-light system with two equal lights placed at 45 degrees to the subject-camera axis.


A 50-mm lens is recommended by the authors because it allows the photographer to work at a practical distance while keeping facial structures in focus, although the article acknowledges that other authors recommend longer focal lengths for facial photography.


Limitations and Conclusion


Dynamic recording also has limitations. Exact head movement can be difficult to control, the platform rotates in one direction, the device described has an 80-kg weight limit, and the setup requires dedicated space. The method does not replace three-dimensional imaging for quantitative surface analysis and does not provide preoperative morphing simulation.


The authors conclude that a simple rotating platform can improve the precision, objectivity and reproducibility of rhinoplasty documentation and may also be relevant to other aesthetic procedures such as facelift, otoplasty, blepharoplasty and body contouring.
